Dental Sealants: The Protection You Need for a Safe Smile

Posted .

Do you ever think about the harmful substances in your mouth that constantly threatening your teeth? If not, now is the time to do so. Tooth decay and gum disease are very serious dental problems that need to be avoided at all costs, and our team at Family Smile Center LLC is thrilled to help you do so with dental sealants.

Who should get sealants?
Usually, children are the ones who receive dental sealants. This is because their smiles are more prone to tooth decay because they don’t necessarily know how to properly care for their smiles. However, adults are more than welcome to take advantage of dental sealants. The only time they cannot is if they have molars that have tooth decay or dental fillings.

How are sealants applied?
A sealant is applied with an easy and simple process. First, your dentist will thoroughly clean the tooth that is receiving the sealant. Then, he will dry it and will surround it with cotton swabs to keep the tooth dry for a long period of time. Next, he will roughen the surfaces of the tooth with an acidic solution. This will help the sealant bond to the tooth. Your dentist will then rinse and dry the tooth once again. When the tooth is ready, he will paint the sealant onto the tooth and will harden it with a special light.

How long do sealants last?
Dental sealants can last up to 10 years, but they do need to be frequently checked at six month dental cleanings and exams. If necessary, your dentist will replace them.
