What is healing time after a wisdom tooth extraction?
Family Smile Center patients have wisdom tooth extractions done at a modern facility with the latest available technology. The surgical expertise of Dr. Peter Cha and the dental experience of Dr. Danny Dinh, assure that the extraction and healing go smoothly.
Patients are usually recovered, feeling well and eating normally, within two-to-three days. (Healing time may be a little longer with multiple extractions, or for a patient with a high risk of complications.)
Dr. Cha and Dr. Dinh will ask you to take these steps at home to speed your healing time:

Patients are usually recovered, feeling well and eating normally, within two-to-three days. (Healing time may be a little longer with multiple extractions, or for a patient with a high risk of complications.)
Dr. Cha and Dr. Dinh will ask you to take these steps at home to speed your healing time:
- Local anesthetic takes a few hours to wear off. Be careful not to bite your numb tongue, cheeks, or lips. Call our office if numbness persists in a specific area.
- Some pain, swelling, minor bleeding at the socket, and jaw soreness are normal. Bite periodically on a cotton pad for a few hours, changing the pad if it becomes blood-soaked. Rest with your head propped up on pillows. Call us if the socket is still bleeding after 24 hours.
- Take recommended over-the-counter or prescription medications for pain.
- Place an ice pack on your cheek – on for 20 minutes, then off for two hours – during the first day. Then you may apply a warm, moist towel for a day or two.
- Start with a liquid diet, but do not suck from a straw. Add soft, then solid foods gradually.
- Take it easy for awhile, with no hard physical activity.
- Starting on the third day, gently rinse with warm salt water, and continue to brush and floss (gently in the area of the extraction).
- Do not touch the wound with your fingers!
- Do not smoke for at least 24 hours.
- Some stitches dissolve, but be sure to keep your appointment to have them removed if we prescribe that.
- Dry socket (when the protective blood clot is lost too soon) is rare, but causes pain and inflammation. Call us if you have these symptoms.
