Braces
Orthodontics, orthodontic and orthopedic appliances, brackets, expanders, Invisalign, and Essix, all fall into the general category of braces. Braces are devices and techniques used to align and straighten teeth as well as to improve the shape of the jaws in order to achieve a better appearance and/or better function. Under bites, overbites cross bites, open bites, deep bites, and crooked teeth, all fall into the category of malocclusion. One can simplify by stating that braces are used to treat malocclusions. Even if the teeth are straight, but the bite is off, one can have uneven or premature wearing of the teeth and possible jaw joint (TMJ) problems.
A bad bite is like having a bad front-end alignment on a car. One can still drive the car, but the tires will wear unevenly or prematurely. As parents, it is important to have the dentist do an orthodontic evaluation on your child. If there are foreseeable problems, it may be better to treat them earlier than later. Early treatment can sometimes eliminate the need for extractions in crowded cases by expanding the jaw during the child’s growth. This may not be feasible after growth and development has ceased, making extractions the only way to create significant space for a very crowded case. Braces are not only for kids anymore. More and more adults are seeking orthodontic correction for their smiles. There are also techniques such as Essix, which can be used to treat minor cases with less cost, consisting of clear, less visible trays which are removable by the patient for better oral hygiene.
Braces are no longer the unsightly conventional metal braces. You can choose from a wide range of colored, fancy braces for teens and tweens, and even invisible braces, commonly known as Invisalign.
We would be more than happy to discuss your orthodontic options here at the Family Smile Center.
